Kartik Purnima 2025: Devotees Take Holy Dips as Ghats Shine for Dev Deepawali

The full moon of the Kartik month holds great religious significance, with devotees engaging in acts of charity, lighting lamps, and visiting temples.
In Haridwar, thousands of devotees gathered at Har Ki Pauri from the early hours to take a dip in the Ganga River, believed to cleanse sins and bring prosperity. The ghats echoed with devotional hymns as pilgrims participated in the Ganga Aarti. Devotee Shobha Gosain described the experience as “truly uplifting,” while Rakesh Kumar praised the well-organized arrangements and disciplined security. Authorities ensured safety by dividing the area into multiple zones and sectors.
Varanasi witnessed a spectacular display as over 10 lakh earthen lamps illuminated the ghats of the Ganga for Dev Deepawali. Devotees and tourists took holy dips at Dashashwamedh Ghat, visited Kashi Vishwanath Temple, performed aarti, and offered lamps. According to belief, gods descend to bathe in the Ganga on this day, and participating in the rituals brings happiness, prosperity, and spiritual blessings.
In Ayodhya, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, devotees observed similar rituals. At Saryu Ghat in Ayodhya and Ganga Ghat in Patna, large crowds took holy dips. Thousands gathered along the Shipra River in Ujjain and Narmada River in Jabalpur for ritual baths. In Odisha, the Boita Bandana festival celebrated the state’s ancient maritime heritage, with devotees floating miniature lamps on rivers, commemorating voyages of Kalinga traders.
Kartik Purnima is also linked to Lord Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have incarnated as Matsya (the fish) on this day. Across the country, the day was marked with devotion, charity, and cultural celebrations, highlighting India’s rich spiritual and maritime heritage.
This Kartik Purnima, with sacred dips, illuminated ghats, and centuries-old traditions, once again united devotees in faith and reverence, reflecting the deep-rooted spiritual and cultural values of India.
